Regna terrae, cantate Deo

Title: Regna terrae, cantate Deo
Rating/Pairing: PG, gen
Fandom: Supernatural
Summary: The words of the exorcism ritual are familiar enough by now that Sam can recite them from memory.

/Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus--/

The demon fights him every step of the way, of course. They always do. Physically, psychically, mentally, verbally, every weapon at its disposal. Anger and hatred are the demon's way of expressing fear: I don't want to die. Sam knows this, and really fucking doesn't care.

/--omnis satanica potestas--/

It's a thousand times easier when the situation's contained, when the demon is safely restrained inside a devil's trap and Sam's on the other side. That wasn't possible this time; Sam's alone, and he knows Dean's coming but he doesn't have time to wait. Doesn't want to take the time.

/--et omnis legio diabolica--/

The words are familiar enough by now that Sam can recite them from memory. Which is a damn good thing because the journal had gone flying out the window early on, as soon as the demon figured out what Sam was up to. He'll get it later, when this is over. He doesn't need it, not for this.

/--adjuramus te./

It laughs at him. "You won't win."

/Ab insidiis diaboli--/

Sam uses the words of the ritual as answer enough. He can taste blood in his mouth, and the salt of sweat when he licks his lips; it's hot as hell in the room.

/--libera nos, Domine./

The demon's struggles grow more desperate. The room's a mess. Sam is forced backwards, stumbles painfully over an upended chair, gets slammed against the wall. He'll have bruises by morning; devil's rainbow, he's heard them called. He'll recover.

/Te rogamus, audi nos./

By the end of it, the demon's powers are tight around Sam's throat, strangling him. He forces the words out, no louder than a whisper, gasping for air between each phrase, sometimes each word. It could kill him, like this. It should have thought of it sooner. He's too close to the end.

/Benedictus Deus./

The last few words, he isn't able to speak; the demon's closed his throat too tight. Can't speak, can't breathe, and there are black spots beginning to dance at the edge of his vision. Sam closes his eyes and thinks the words, as hard as he can.

/Gloria Patri./

It's over by the time Dean gets there.

He comes with weapons in both hands, gun in his right and rosary wrapped around his left, and he's the best thing Sam's ever seen. Sam's too exhausted to move much -- the only reason he's sitting rather than lying down is that the wall's propping him up -- and his throat's too bruised to make it worth speaking, but he gives Dean a thumbs up and a small smile.

Dean crouches next to him. "Hey." He puts his left hand against Sam's cheek; his hand is warm, rosary beads cool and smooth, and Dean relaxes when Sam doesn't flinch away. "You okay?"

Sam nods. Sore as hell, and it'll be worse in the morning, but that's par for the course. "No thanks to you," he says, grinning. His voice is hoarse. "What took you so long?"

"Stopped for ice cream," Dean says, meaning: I'm glad you're okay.

Sam raises an eyebrow at him, meaning: What, you didn't get me any? and also: Thank you for coming.

Dean smirks at him. "You don't bother showing up, little brother, you miss out."

He helps Sam to his feet. Sam winces; his ankle throbs, probably twisted rather than broken but still not fun to stand on, and Dean silently shifts to take some of his weight. "I'm okay," Sam says, but Dean doesn't let go.

"Sam." There's a world of quiet pride in Dean's voice. "You did good."

"Done it before," he mutters, but they both know that isn't quite true. Sam's done exorcisms before, they both have, but not like this.

"We should call Bobby," Dean says after a while. "He said it wasn't possible for someone to exorcise themself."

"It isn't." Sam grins. "I just got lucky."

They both know that's not true, either.

Thank you! *grin* It was fun, writing the exorcism in a way that made sense both ways.

And your icon is way too mesmerising. *watches it for about five minutes straight*

Thank you! (...I'm not entirely convinced that it would actually be possible, especially given the amount of control demons have over the body they're possessing, but if anyone could do it, it would be Sam. hee.)

And suddenly this: Sam closes his eyes and thinks the words, as hard as he can makes more sense.
Very nice!

Oh, dude! Totally didn't see this one coming. That's what I call an unusual concept. Loved Sam so detirmined, so strong, and Dean covering up his fear for Sam with that smooth brotherly concern. Nicely done. :-)
Cheers ~
